This week’s highlighted visitor: The Red-bellied woodpecker!
Woodpeckers are found in forests, parks, and even suburban backyards, Red-bellied Woodpeckers are striking birds with a pale belly and vibrant red feathers on their heads and napes. These busy birds drum rapidly on tree trunks, searching for insects or creating nesting cavities with rhythmic taps. Their loud, sharp calls echo through the woods, a familiar sound as they flit between trees with quick, fluttering flights, always in search of their next meal.
These woodpeckers are often confused for Red-headed Woodpeckers because upon seeing the bird for the first time, who wouldn’t describe this as a “red headed woodpecker”? However, the Red-headed Woodpeckers have red faces in addition to the red cap and neck.
