Wild Girls: How the Outdoors Shaped the Women Who Challenged a Nation by Tiya Miles explores how time spent in nature — from plantations to wilderness — equipped 19th-century women like Harriet Tubman and Louisa May Alcott with crucial skills, resilience, and expansive thinking to defy societal norms, resist racism and sexism, and ultimately change America. The book argues nature served as a vital training ground, fostering independence, critical awareness, and revolutionary ideas, and calls for equal access to outdoor spaces for all girls today.
