A Pulitzer Prize-winning novel set in the 1950s, following Thomas Wazhashk, a Chippewa council member and night watchman, as he fights the U.S. government's "Termination Bill" (HCR 108) designed to end federal recognition of tribes and seize their land. The story interweaves his political battle with personal narratives, exploring themes of love, loss, community, and Indigenous identity through characters like his niece Patrice Paranteau and aspiring boxer Wood Mountain, as they navigate reservation life, cultural traditions, and the threat of assimilation.
