This week’s highlighted visitor: The Red-tailed hawk!
A raptor you can spot soaring high above open fields and roadsides, Red-tailed Hawks are powerful birds of prey with strikingly reddish feathers on their tails. These majestic hunters glide effortlessly on thermal currents, scanning the ground below for small mammals and birds. Their sharp, raspy calls echo across the landscape, often heard as they circle overhead, wings spread wide, on a hunt or as they stake out their territory. Red-tailed Hawks are the most commonly seen hawk in New Jersey.
In spring 2024, birders were hopeful that Teaneck Creek would become home to a nesting pair of Redtails, but sadly they abandoned the nest shortly after beginning construction.
