This week’s highlighted visitor: The Red Fox!

A mammal you can spot in forests and suburbs, Red Foxes are sleek, rust-colored creatures with bushy tails and sharp, alert eyes. These clever hunters move with a swift, silent grace, often pausing to listen for rodents or other small prey below ground. Their high-pitched calls echo through the night, a sound that carries across fields and woodlands.

While predators have a bad reputation due to their conflict with farmers (for stealing chickens in the case of foxes), red foxes are native to New Jersey and protected by Bergen County Park Regulations. Dogs off leash have unfortunately been known to harass foxes, which are not much larger than a typical house cat. The Fox and the Hound is a fictional Disney story, sadly not a Creek Tale - when visiting, please keep your dog on a leash!
